五味子提取物为木兰科植物五味的干燥成熟果实提取物，具有收敛固涩、益气生津、补肾宁心的功效。五味子属中药收敛类药，但近二十年来的临床观察，五味子对肝炎有良好的治疗效果。对改善全身症状，如食欲不振、乏力、失眠等有作用。具有保护肝脏和促进肝细胞再生，增强肝脏解毒机能及增强肾上腺皮质机能，从而使肝脏功能恢复。

具有明显的降转氨酶和保护肝脏的作用。敛肺滋肾，生津敛汗，涩精止血，宁心安神。益气生津，补肾养心，收敛固涩。用于肺虚喘嗽、生津。目前五味子的开发应用也主要是集中在治疗肝炎的新药方面。
