红景天曾被用于中国，西伯利亚和乌克兰的喀尔巴阡山地区的传统草药中。在前苏联，该被作为一类适应原使用，用于减轻疲劳和增强机体对各种压力的天然抵抗能力。在西伯利亚传言，“坚持饮用红景天茶可活过100岁”。红景天传统上也被用于男女性功能障碍。在前苏联，该草药的一类很受欢迎的制剂就是一种称为“nastojka”，通过将新鲜红景天根与40%酒精混合并放置一星期制备而成的酊剂。每餐饭后一茶匙量的“nastojka”被作为性功能障碍患者的处方。在西伯利亚特别是在冰冷潮湿的冬季，人们常常服用红景天以防止疾病。在蒙古，其被用于肺结核和癌症的治疗。

已确定有接近200种不同的红景天种类。其中仅有14种曾进行过生化研究并发现红景天其化学成分和药理活性明显与其种类有关。其独特的化学活性成分为rosavin（活性最强），rosin，rosarin，rhodiolin和红景天甙。仅玫瑰红景天含有rosavin，rosin和rosarin。

以红景天根及根茎，粉碎成粗粉，用70%乙醇回流提取，分取提取液，减压回收乙醇，所得浓缩液加等量水搅拌均匀，静置，过滤，反复处理3次，滤液减压浓缩，依次用石油醚、氯仿、乙酸乙酯、正丁醇萃取，乙酸乙酯和正丁醇部分分别回收溶剂，得酪醇粗品和红景天苷粗品。
